FAQ

Who is eligible?

  • Films must have been made in New York State.
  • Films must have be completed between July 2023-July-2024.
  • Filmmakers can submit as many projects as they like within the completion time.
  • No entry may be submitted into more than one category.
  • All submissions must be 100% original.
  • All student submissions must be 100% student produced (faculty supervision is allowed).

What are the categories?

  1. Short Documentary (under 10 minutes)
    • 2:30 to 10 minutes in length
  2. Long Documentary (between 10-30 minutes)
    • 10 to 30 minutes in length
  3. Fiction
    • Filmmakers may submit a live-action narrative short film under 15 minutes.
  4. Experimental
    • Filmmakers may submit an experimental piece under 15 minutes.
  5. Short Animation
    • Filmmakers may submit an animated short film under 5 minutes.

  • High school and college students must submit within the high school and college categories (thesis films are included as student films)
  • Emerging Filmmakers must be 30 years old or younger, and projects must have been made independently.
  • Open category is for filmmakers 30 years of age or older. Projects must have been made independently.

What is the submission fee?

EARLYBIRD DEADLINE:

College, Emerging, Open Category: $15

REGULAR DEADLINE:

High School Category: $3

College, Emerging, Open Category: $15

LAST MINUTE DEADLINE:

High School Category: $5

College, Emerging, Open Category: $20

What is the deadline to submit?

The submission deadline ends July 1, 2024.

When are the official selections announced?

Filmmakers will be notified of their submission status on September 4, 2024, and must send in their film and other materials between September 6-13.

The official selections will be announced online September 15, 2024.

When and where is the festival?

Our Harriet Tubman Freedom Award recipient will screen their film on November 8, 2023 in the evening, while the curated film screenings will take on November 9, 2023 followed by an award ceremony for the winning filmmakers.

Both events will take place at Auburn Public Theater in the heart of Auburn, NY. Options for lodging will be available closer to the festival, as well as a full schedule of events.

How do I submit my film?

Film submissions must be made online through FilmFreeway.

We do not accept DVDs or email submissions. We do not accept works in progress. 

Can I submit more than one film?

Yes! As long as they were made after July 2023 you can submit as many films as you’d like!

Can anyone of any age submit?

YES! College students of any age can submit in the college category.

Filmmakers who independently produce (without help from a college/university) their film that are younger than 30 years old should submit to the emerging category.

Filmmakers who independently produce (without help from a college/university) their film who are older than 30 years of age can submit in the open category.

CAYUGA FILM FESTIVAL RULES

  • By submitting to Cayuga Film Festival, entrants understand they have the legal right to submit their works.
  • Filmmakers are legally responsible for for their intellectual property, and by submitting to Cayuga Film Festival, filmmakers must have all necessary rights secured, including but not limited to, music, content, and images.
  • Cayuga Film Festival, its’ partners, judges, sponsors or organizers are not responsible for losses, damages, etc.
  • By submitting to this festival, you agree to the following-If accepted, Cayuga Film Festival may use video excerpts and film stills from accepted film for marketing purposes (print, web and television).
  • Cayuga Film Festival may also use filmmakers names, official photos on FilmFreeway, contact information, publicity stills, and film logline. 
  • Winning entries maybe shown, but time restrictions may require only excerpts be shown.
  • The judges reserve the right to combine or move entries into different categories.
  • If the filmmakers’ name(s) are misspelled on a plaque, award or certificate, due to misspellings during the submission process, it is up to the filmmaker to pay for a new plaque if it is not corrected before then.

BY SUBMITTING TO THIS FESTIVAL, YOU AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • If accepted, Cayuga Film Festival may use video excerpts and film stills from accepted film for marketing purposes (print, web and television). 
  • Cayuga Film Festival may also use filmmakers names, photos, contact information, publicity stills, and film logline for print, social media, and the website.
  • Winning entries may be shown, but time restrictions may require only excerpts be shown. 
  • The judges reserve the right to combine or move entries into different categories. 
  • The judges reserve the right to make no award in a category in any given year.
